Zaniolo's Journey: From Early Promise to Renewed Stability
A Sincere Look at Past Struggles and Personal Responsibility
In a revealing interview with SportWeek, as reported by TuttoMercatoWeb, the Udinese striker offered a frank assessment of his professional life. Zaniolo’s career, which has only recently found its footing, was previously marked by stints in Turkey, England, Bergamo, and Florence—all of which failed to deliver on the high expectations set by his promising early days at Roma.
Embracing a New Chapter and Earning Trust at Udinese
“It’s true that I haven’t performed to my full potential in recent years, and I take full responsibility for that,” Zaniolo stated. He continued, “You have to earn respect and affection through your actions on the field and your demeanor off it. I didn’t expect everyone at Udinese to embrace me instantly. There were doubts and reservations, as I hadn’t played much in two or three years, and my reputation wasn’t the best. But I made a promise from day one to give my all for the team, and everything else, including their support, naturally followed.”
Reflecting on His Experience Under Coach Gasperini
Regarding his tenure at Atalanta with Gian Piero Gasperini, Zaniolo provided a thoughtful yet candid account. “I had just undergone foot surgery when I arrived in Bergamo, so I was behind during pre-season,” he explained. “My relationship with Gasperini was built on mutual respect. He is undoubtedly one of the finest coaches out there, but at that specific time, he was asking more of me than I was prepared to give.”
The Unforeseen Challenges During His Time at Fiorentina
His subsequent move to Fiorentina, a club where he had previously felt at ease, also did not yield the desired outcomes. “I believed I was stepping into a comfortable environment, but things didn’t go as planned there either. I’m still unsure why,” Zaniolo confessed.
