Journey with LGHL: From Basketball to Music

Nov 19, 2024 at 10:01 PM
At Land-Grant Holy Land, our passion for Ohio State and sports in general drives every step. As a LGHL writer, I venture away from the campus on my own, fueled by that enthusiasm. This is my fourth season covering Ohio State women's basketball and I've traversed to Minneapolis, Chicago, Louisville, Ann Arbor, and beyond, bringing the Buckeyes' action to you.

Music: A Parallel Passion

I hold a deep love for music, perhaps even more than covering women's college basketball. When I'm not at the Schott or during practice, I'm at a concert or lost in music. Whether it's on the way to a game or while cooking dinner, there's always a tune playing. Outside of basketball writing, I also contribute at Columbus Calling, writing concert reviews of the shows I attend around the city.

Playlist for Away Games

For each away game this season, I'm sharing a playlist. These playlists vary in theme or not. The first batch features songs I've loved over the past few years, spanning from alternative to alt-country, singer-songwriter, and even a touch of punk. When curating, I aimed for songs I liked that would also be great for the drive through the hilly terrain from Central Ohio to Athens. It's long enough to get you to the Convocation Center without the traffic hassles. Remember, these songs aren't tied to any person or team, and I'm not responsible for your musical preferences. After all, musical tastes are as diverse as the teams in the Big Ten.The playlist on Apple Music: [Link to Apple Music Away Day Playlist]The playlist on Spotify: [Link to Spotify Away Day Playlist]Check back later in the season for playlists for trips to Ann Arbor, State College, College Park, and Bloomington. Also, don't miss the Big Ten Tournament and maybe March Madness!

Alternative to Alt-Country

One of the standout genres in this playlist is alternative to alt-country. Songs like "Ramblin' Man" by the Allman Brothers Band bring a raw and energetic feel. The lyrics tell stories of wanderlust and the open road, perfectly capturing the spirit of our travels. Another gem is "The Weight" by The Band, with its infectious rhythm and soulful vocals. It's a song that gets stuck in your head and makes you want to hit the road. These alternative to alt-country tunes add a unique flavor to the playlist and set the tone for our journeys.

Singer-Songwriter

Singer-songwriter songs are also a significant part of this playlist. Artists like John Prine with his heartfelt lyrics and gentle melodies. His song "Paradise" is a classic that touches the soul. Another example is Jason Isbell's "24 Frames," where his storytelling abilities shine through. These singer-songwriter tracks offer a more intimate and personal listening experience, adding depth to the playlist.

Punk Vibes

For those who love a bit of punk energy, there are a few songs in the playlist. Bands like The Ramones with their fast-paced and rebellious sound. "Blitzkrieg Bop" is a perfect example, with its catchy guitar riffs and energetic beats. The Clash's "London Calling" also brings that punk spirit, with its powerful message and driving rhythm. These punk songs add a bit of edge and excitement to the playlist, making it a diverse mix of musical styles. If listening to music isn't your thing, but you still need some background noise for your trip to Athens, listen to the latest episode of the "LGHL WBB Podcast." I discuss the Buckeyes' close win over Belmont and preview the games against two MAC schools this week. Whether you're at home watching on ESPN+ or on the road, this music works anywhere.
