In a significant cultural revival, Manny’s Live Performance Space has emerged as a vibrant new hub for international music in downtown State College. Located at the intersection of Heister Street and East College Avenue, this venue is breathing new life into a space that once housed The Saloon, which closed its doors in 2023. Owner Corey Elbin envisions Manny’s as a platform for diverse musical acts, fostering community engagement and artistic expression. The inaugural event in mid-January featured Colombian artist Yeison Landero, who introduced the audience to the rhythmic beats of Cumbia. With a history of promoting global talent, Elbin aims to transform State College into a year-round destination for live performances, offering an intimate setting that accommodates up to 200 attendees.
The opening of Manny’s marks a poignant moment for Elbin, whose connection to music runs deep. For over two and a half years, he has been organizing international performances under Gorinto Productions, a member of the Secret Planet Collective. This network of promoters along the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic collaborates to bring artists from around the world to the United States. Since 2021, Elbin has successfully hosted numerous acts at Centre County venues during the annual Rhoneymeade Fest. Now, with Manny’s, he hopes to provide a consistent stage for both established and emerging artists. The venue’s capacity of around 200 people offers a unique opportunity for musicians to connect with audiences in an intimate setting, particularly those who may not be widely recognized in the U.S.
Manny’s Live Performance Space is more than just a venue; it represents a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. Elbin emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming environment for all, including underage individuals and those in recovery. By avoiding alcohol sales but partnering with local breweries like Boal City Brewery for certain events, Elbin aims to make live music accessible to everyone. The name “Manny’s” pays homage to Elbin’s beloved cat of 23 years, who has accompanied him on countless journeys and played a pivotal role in his life. Upcoming events include a performance by Congolese artist KOKOKO! on March 5, further solidifying Manny’s place in the local music scene.
With its rich history and forward-looking vision, Manny’s Live Performance Space promises to enrich the cultural landscape of State College. By providing a platform for diverse musical expressions and fostering a sense of community, Elbin’s venture sets the stage for an exciting future. As the venue continues to welcome international talent, it invites residents and students alike to experience the power of live music in a space that values creativity, inclusivity, and connection.
