The St. Mary’s County Youth Organization (SMCYO) Baseball League in Hollywood, Maryland, is making a remarkable effort to assist children affected by Hurricane Helene. On Thursday, November 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Higgs Memorial Field on MD-235, they are hosting a “Stuff A Truck” Toy Drive. This initiative aims to bring holiday cheer to those who have lost their homes and belongings.

Bringing Joy to Hurricane Victims

Community members are warmly encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to contribute to this worthy cause. Each donation earns a ticket, giving participants a chance to win a gift card to Texas Roadhouse. The idea for this toy drive was born as part of the league’s broader community engagement. As they were brainstorming ways to be more involved outside of youth baseball, they decided to give back in meaningful ways. 1: The inspiration came from seeing flyers from the Knights of Columbus and SOMD PACERS organizations promoting aid for hurricane victims. It was a natural fit for the league’s players, who saw an opportunity to help kids giving to other kids – something they could easily understand and relate to. Recognizing the importance of bringing joy to those who have lost everything, they were enthusiastic about getting involved. 2: The league’s board emphasized their goal of “stuffing a truck bed.” If they can overflow just one truck, it will mean the world to them. They have plenty of backup truck beds ready to use, ensuring that they can collect as many toys as possible. This marks their first participation in a charitable initiative of this kind, but they hope to make it an annual tradition, supporting children’s charities in the future.

Engaging with the Community

SMCYO is not just about baseball; it’s about making a positive impact on the community. By hosting this toy drive, they are showing that they care about the well-being of all children. It’s a chance for the community to come together and make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. 1: The event provides a tangible way for people to show their support for hurricane victims. It’s a simple act of kindness that can have a big impact. Whether it’s a toy or a ticket to win a gift card, every contribution counts. 2: Through this initiative, the SMCYO is setting an example for other organizations and individuals. It shows that even in the face of a natural disaster, there is hope and the power to make a difference. By working together, we can help those in need and create a more caring community. For more information about SMCYO or the toy drive, visit their website at www.smcyo.com or follow them on Facebook.
