The Columbus Crew has officially secured the services of Spanish midfielder Brais Mendez, bringing him over from La Liga club Real Sociedad. This significant signing sees the 29-year-old midfielder joining the team as a designated player, filling an international roster spot.
Mendez's contract with the Crew extends through the 2028-29 season, with an additional club option for the 2029-30 season. General Manager Issa Tall expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting Mendez's exceptional technical abilities and deep understanding of the game, honed in one of the world's premier football leagues. This addition is expected to provide both immediate and long-term benefits to the team as they aim to improve their standing in the Eastern Conference.
Before his move to MLS, Mendez spent a successful decade in Spain's top division, featuring for Celta Vigo from 2017 to 2022 and Real Sociedad from 2022 to 2026. During his tenure with Real Sociedad, he impressively contributed 33 goals and 24 assists across 166 matches, playing a crucial role in the team's qualification for the UEFA Champions League after the 2022-23 season and their Copa Del Rey triumph earlier this year. His earlier career at his boyhood club, Celta Vigo, also saw him net 22 goals and provide 18 assists in 166 appearances. The Crew, currently positioned 10th in the Eastern Conference, will look to Mendez's experience and skill to propel them forward as they resume action against New York City FC on July 22, following the FIFA World Cup break.
This strategic signing underscores the Columbus Crew's commitment to strengthening its roster with top-tier international talent, aiming for enhanced performance and greater success in the league. Mendez's proven track record and wealth of experience are poised to make a substantial positive impact, inspiring both his teammates and the fan base.
