The roster for the upcoming Rocket Classic golf tournament is nearing completion, with most of the 145 available slots now filled. This will mark the eighth and final iteration of the PGA Tour event held at the Detroit Golf Club. Notable participants include golf stars Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka, both making their debut at this tournament, as well as Rickie Fowler, who triumphed in 2023 and has been a consistent presence since the event's inception.
The confirmed lineup boasts an impressive array of talent, featuring four golfers within the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking: Cameron Young (No. 3), Russell Henley (No. 5), Chris Gotterup (No. 7), and Wyndham Clark (No. 9), the reigning U.S. Open champion. Overall, eight players from the top 20 and 53 from the top 100 are set to compete. Tournament organizers are still holding out hope for a few more high-profile additions as the PGA Tour playoffs approach. The deadline for PGA Tour professionals to commit to the Rocket Classic, which precedes the playoffs, is Friday evening, with the tournament scheduled from July 30 to August 2.
The final four spots in the competition will be decided through an 18-hole qualifier at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington Township on Monday, an event open and free to the public. This qualifier typically draws former PGA Tour players and individuals with local ties. Last year, Otto Black and Brett White from Michigan successfully qualified. This year's event already includes two local players: Detroiter Joe Hooks, who received a sponsor's exemption, and Ann Arbor native Patrick Wilkes-Krier, who earned his entry by winning the 2025 Michigan PGA Championship. While the player list is subject to change, some adjustments have already occurred; for instance, Sam Burns, world No. 11, withdrew after the birth of his second child, and Aaron Rai, world No. 20, reevaluated his schedule after winning the PGA Championship in May.
The Rocket Classic represents a culmination of elite talent and local aspirations, offering a platform for both established stars and emerging contenders. Its role as a crucial event before the PGA Tour playoffs ensures intense competition, while also providing a valuable opportunity for regional players to showcase their skills. The tournament not only highlights the vibrant golf community but also inspires future generations to pursue excellence in the sport.
