Wolfsburg has rebuffed an approach from 1. FC Köln concerning their Brazilian defensive midfielder, Vinicius Souza. Köln's proposal involved a loan arrangement with a subsequent purchase option for the 27-year-old. Despite their recent relegation, Wolfsburg intends to keep Souza as a key player in their strategy to quickly regain a spot in the Bundesliga. This decision leaves Köln to continue its search for a suitable holding midfielder, a crucial objective following the transfer of Eric Martel.
The quest for a new defensive midfielder has been a priority for Köln, especially after Eric Martel's move to Mainz 05. While Edson Álvarez of West Ham United was considered a potential recruit, and a reunion with former Köln player Ellyes Skhiri was also explored, neither option materialized. Skhiri is no longer a viable choice for Köln, even though he has been given permission to depart Eintracht Frankfurt. The club has decided to explore other avenues to fill the vacant role in their squad.
Thomas Kessler, Köln's managing director for sport, recently affirmed the club's determination to acquire a number six player to bolster team stability. However, financial constraints dictate that Köln must identify an athlete available under favorable terms. A loan deal with a future purchase option for Souza would have aligned perfectly with these financial parameters. Nevertheless, Wolfsburg has shown no inclination to accept such a proposition, holding firm on their valuation of the player.
Wolfsburg had invested approximately €15 million to secure Souza from Sheffield United last summer. The former Flamengo academy product arrived with experience from multiple European clubs, including Lommel, KV Mechelen, Espanyol, and 36 appearances in the Premier League. Despite this pedigree, his initial season in Germany was underwhelming. Under former coach Paul Simonis, Souza was frequently deployed in an advanced midfield position, preventing him from excelling in his preferred role of screening the defense and initiating attacks from deeper areas.
Simonis's tactical choices regarding Souza drew considerable criticism, as the arrangement seemed designed to avoid displacing club captain Maximilian Arnold. This strategy ultimately failed to benefit either Souza or the team, contributing to a season that saw Wolfsburg's performance decline. Consequently, Simonis was dismissed, and Souza worked under two more head coaches, Daniel Bauer and Dieter Hecking, during the campaign, highlighting the tumultuous period for the club.
Toward the end of Wolfsburg's relegation season, Souza began to display improvements, particularly when Daniel Bauer took the helm. Bauer seemingly found a more appropriate role for the midfielder, deploying him as a defensively oriented link player within a 3-3-2-2 formation. In this setup, Souza was able to drop back to assist central defenders while still having the freedom to carry the ball forward and connect with teammates, showcasing the qualities that led to his initial expensive acquisition.
His performance against Hamburg notably demonstrated his capabilities, where he excelled at winning challenges in deeper areas, completing forward passes, and leveraging his physical strength to stabilize the team's central axis. Although this resurgence came too late to prevent Wolfsburg's relegation, it underscored his potential value. Dieter Hecking, who transitioned into Wolfsburg's sporting administration, clearly believes in Souza's continued utility, and new head coach Tobias Strobl also views him as a probable starter in the second division. Therefore, Wolfsburg is unlikely to consider selling Souza unless an interested club matches their original €15 million investment, a figure well beyond Köln's current financial reach. This stance means Köln must now explore other affordable options to address their need for defensive stability.
